Blur vs. Bokeh And My Own Out Of Focus Photography

2/26/2015

Learn the difference between blur and bokeh in photography
Early on in my pursuit of digital photography, I noticed other photographers had really beautiful "blurry" backgrounds (and sometime foregrounds) in their images.  I wondered (and wondered, and wondered) how they were getting that gorgeous "blur".

In post processing, I would shoot with my kit lens (18-55mm f5.6) and then use a blur filter to try to achieve the same results.  In time, I learned that the beautiful out of focus backgrounds I was looking for were actually called Bokeh and simply blurring in post processing would never achieve the same results.

What is Bokeh?

Bokeh is the way your lens renders out-of-focus points of light.

What Is Blur?

Simple Blur can occur in many different ways. Motion Blur occurs when an object is moving at any distance away from the lens and the shutter speed does not compensate to capture the object in focus. Other types of blur can be caused by camera shake, zoom, and other human errors.  For the purposes of this article, we want to explore the kind of blur that is created in post processing by using a Gaussian Blur Filter, and how it does not equate to bokeh.

The visual difference between Bokeh and Blur?

Bokeh

Learn the difference between blur and bokeh in photography

This is an example of one of my images taken using Manual Focus and is complete Bokeh.  In comparing to the image on the right, you can see that the qualities are much different.  When you look closely, you can see the points of light of rendered in much different way.

Blur

This image was taken in focus with a Gaussian Blur filter applied in Adobe Photoshop.  The beautiful points of light achieved in the image to left are non-existent in this image.

How Do I Achieve Bokeh In My Images?

There are few ways to achieve beautiful bokeh in your image.  My greatest advice is not to use your kit lens.  Bokeh is achieved by narrowing your field of focus and opening up your aperture.  The widest aperture on a kit lens is typically somewhere around 5.6.  Unless you are getting very close to your subject with a kit lens, it isn't going to happen.  You should instead, be on the lookout for a lens with a wide aperture.  Keywords to look for would be f 1.4, f 1.2, f 1.8.  Even at a reasonable distance you will achieve a beautiful bokeh and bring the focus to your subject.  I have laid out some product recommendations at the end of this post.

My Own Out-Of-Focus Photography

Incidentally, in the last couple of years I have fallen in love with out of focus photography.  The painting-like quality is captivating to me.  This is one of my prints.  On top, I have used a texture that is currently in testing.  It will be one of several that we (MLC) are hoping to release this spring.  The texture I used gives it a beautiful canvas quality.

Wide Aperture Lens Recommendations

I have heard from many of my photography friends that they notice much sharper images with their widest aperture lenses.  I personally use the Canon 85mm 1.8 as my every day lens, and I did order it from Amazon as I do all of my equipment, even my Canon 5d Mark iii.  I love them since they are one of the few companies that will ship to me when I am overseas.

6 Points To Consider When Buying A Dedicated Macro Lens

Disclosure:  Please note that some of the links below are affiliate links and I may earn a commission if you purchase through those links.  It is important to note that I only post products that I personally would purchase from companies that I trust.  Any reviews are based on my honest opinion.

Last week, we talked about how you can save a few dollars by buying Macro extension tubes.  This week, I thought maybe we would talk about the tubes higher priced cousin, the dedicated Macro lens.

I am considering six points in my search for a dedicated Macro lens:

1.  Does it have a 1:1 or greater magnification ratio?
2.  Is it a Canon (insert your camera brand here)?
3.  What is the minimum focusing distance?
4.  Is it a prime lens or zoom lens?
5.  Can I realistically achieve my goal images with this lens?
6.  Is it autofocus or manual focus?

Let me just say this:  While I do have a working knowledge of Macro photography along with the techniques and equipment needed, I am not an expert in things like...um....light refractory mechanisms, ring cupalators, and other things that I am literally just making up right now.  I am not a nitty gritty techie, just an artist who loves photography.

And what I do know is that I want to take pictures like this.  Seriously.  How amazing.  This would be my goal image as mentioned above.

Macro close up photography of a spider
source

Point 1:  Does the lens have 1:1 or greater magnification

A true Macro lens has a magnification ratio of at least 1:1.  Anything greater such as 5:1 or 3.5:1 is considered extreme macro (my favorite).

Point 2:  Is it a Canon? (insert your camera brand here)

In my lens collection I have lenses that are not branded by the brand of my camera (Canon 5d Mark iii).  They work great but I do not have the ability to send it to Canon for warranty work, and I trust Canon.  While brands like Sigma are great, I would only buy less pricey lenses in an off brand.  I also know that I can take Canon lenses to my local camera shop to be sent away for work.

Point 3:  What is the minimum focusing distance?

The minimum focus distance is ultra-important to me.  If a lens has a minimum focusing distance of let's say 12 inches, it means that I can get no closer than 12 inches to my subject and still be able to focus. This is concerning if I am attempting to get shots like my "goal image" above.

Point 4:  Is it a prime or zoom lens?

Prime lenses are well known for being sharper than zoom lenses.  A prime lens has a fixed focal length such as 100mm, while the focal length of a zoom lens can manipulated from the low end to high end (ex. 70mm-300mm).  I am looking for a prime lens in order to get the sharpest image possible.

Point 5:  Will this lens help me achieve my goal image?

If I want to capture an image like my "goal image" I want to be sure that I don't compromise on all of the points that I am considering.  Regardless of the cost, I want to make sure that I purchase something that will ultimately help me achieve my personal and professional goals.

Point 6:  Is the focus auto or manual?

This point is tricky.  I prefer auto focus and luckily my Macro Extension Tubes have connectors that allow for autofocus.  It can be difficult to steady yourself for a Macro shot in the field and auto focus helps.  At the same time, I find myself switching off the auto focus in favor of manual at times.  The tricky thing about manual is that with the ultra shallow depth of field that is inherent to Macro Photography the plane of focus can be difficult to find.  I would say that this point could go either way depending on how many other points are acceptable for a particular lens.  These points obviously become more clear when a tripod is involved.

LENSES THAT FIT MY CRITERIA

1.  Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens

Canon 100mm f 2.8 Macro Lens
This Canon lens is at the more affordable range of quality Canon Macro lenses. It offers 1:1 magnification, autofocus capability, and a minimum focusing distance of 12 inches.

2.   Nikon 105mm f2.8 Macro Lens

Nikon 105mm f2.8 Macro Lens
This lens from Nikon offers internal autofocus and 1:1 magnification.

3.  Canon 65mm f2.8 1:1-5:1

Canon 65mm f2.8 1:1 5:1 Macro Lens
The minimum focusing distance for this is lens is .8 ft!!!  That means that there is no other option other than to get ultra close.  The maximum magnification is 1:1 -5:1.  True macro at 1:1 and extreme macro at 5:1 magnification.  This is the best dedicated macro lens that Canon offers.  It is also worth mentioning that this lens is Manual Focus only.  There is no auto focus option.

4.  Canon 180mm f3.5 Macro Lens

Canon 180mm f3.5 Macro Lens
The closest focusing distance with this lens is 1.6 feet and the magnification ratio is 1:3.5 (extreme macro).  I love the idea of extreme macro and at 180mm you can really get in close.
If I had to make a decision right now, I would go with number 3, the canon 65mm 2.8 lens.  It offers everything I need, 1:1 magnification, autofocus, and extremely close minimum focusing distance of .8 feet.  The 5:1 magnification ratio would allow me to get extreme macro shots and I would use a tripod to steady the camera.  Finding the plane of focus would still be hard and focusing on different areas would be hard from the same vantage point for focus stacking which must happen in order to get the entire image in focus.

I have been trying to make this choice now for 2 weeks.  What would you do?  Let me know, I need help deciding!!!

How To Use Layer Masks in Adobe Photoshop

How To Use Layer Masks in Adobe Photoshop

I usually do video tutorials for you guys, but this week I have been looking for some information myself on the internet and just didn't have time to sit through video tutorials.  I needed the information quickly.  It occurred to me that I should probably put some instructions into print for quick viewing.  If you want to see this information in action (pun intended) head over to our Video Library and watch this video.

Step 1:  Add A Layer

You can add a layer a few different ways.  In the picture on the left, I have added a "new layer", by clicking the square at the bottom of the screen with the corner turned up.  In the picture on the right, I have added an adjustment layer by clicking the half black, half white circle and choosing "Hue/Saturation".  There is a big difference between these two pictures.  One has a layer mask, and one does not.  The picture on the right has a white box.  This is called a layer mask.  There are many different ways to add a new layer, for todays purposes, we will use these two examples.  A layer is any level that is on top of the "Background" layer.
How To Add A New Layer in Adobe Photoshop
How to add a hue / saturation layer in Adobe Photoshop

Step 2:  Decide If Your Layer Is Black or White

I realize this may sound ridiculous but it is an important step.  If the layer mask is white it means that you can see the effect on the image.  If the layer mask is black it means that you cannot see the effect on the image, it is hidden.  In the two pictures below, you can see that I have played an Action from our new Essential Vintage Action Set.  Many layers have popped up, all of them with a white layer mask.  In the third picture, you can see that the two layer masks are black.

STEP 3:  Select The Brush Tool & Set Your Foreground Color

Brush Tool

The Brush

If your layer mask is white, you will need to use a black brush on it.  If your layer mask is black, you will need to use a white brush on it.  Think opposites.  The picture to the left shows the brush tool highlighted.  If you look at the bottom of the picture, you can see two squares, one is blue, one is white.
Foreground Background colors in Photoshop
This is known as the foreground and background colors.  The square on top is the foreground color, and the square at the back is the background color.  When you are working with layer masks your foreground and background colors should be set to the default provided by Photoshop.  Black and white.  If yours is a different color, as pictured below click the little squares at the top right just above the big squares.  This will set it back to the default.

If your layer mask is black, this is what your foreground/background colors should look like.  White on top, since you need to use a white brush.

Step 4: Brush Off On The White Layer Mask

In this image you can see that I have played an Action from the Essential Vintage Action Set called Afternoon Sun.  It has a white layer mask and because of this, I can see the effect on the image.

How to set your brush opacity in Photoshop

In the image above you can see that the white layer mask is not selected.  You will need to select the white layer mask by clicking on it.  When it is selected, it will look like the image to the left.

Make sure that you set your brush opacity by using the slider to move the percentage between 0 and 100 percent.  The lower the brush opacity, the less of the effect you will remove.
Move your cursor over the image, click and drag it around the areas in white you want to remove the effect.  In the image below I have removed the effect from the left 1/4th of the image.

Brush On, On The Black Layer Mask

In this image, I have played the Flower Child Action from the Essential Vintage Action Set, flattened, and played the Light/Dark brush which has black layer masks.  When this Action plays, nothing happens.  This is due to the black layer mask concealing the effect.  This is done so that I can brush on light and dark only where I choose.
How to brush on a black layer mask in Adobe Photoshop
Two black layer masks

Select the layer mask by clicking on it.  Make sure that your foreground color is set to white and that the brush tool is selected.  Set the brush opacity to whatever works for your image.  Click the image and drag the cursor to reveal the effect.  In this case, I lightened the right 1/4 of the image.

But what if there is no layer mask?

No problem, you can add one.  Simply click on the rectangle with a circle in it and a layer mask will pop up in the layer.  It will automatically give you a white layer mask.  If you want the effect concealed, you can do the following to change it.

How To Shoot 1:1 Macro Photography For Less Than $50.00

2/16/2015

Achieve 1:1 magnification with a macro extension tube! Close up photography is fascinating. This explains everything.

Happy Macro Monday!  Don't forget to post your Macro Images on our Facebook page or Twitter (@MLCActions) to win prizes and get featured tomorrow on the blog!

If you are just getting started in photography or you are hoping to not blow your budget on a dedicated Macro Lens then you need to read this article.  We explain the 1:1 magnification ratio and how you can achieve it without a dedicated Macro lens.

We are hoping to take some of the mystery out of Macro.

Let's just start by saying, you will likely get the best results from a dedicated Macro Lens. This is known. But all of that aside, what we want to talk about today is how to shoot Macro on a budget.  Specifically, by using Macro Extension Tubes.
By definition, Macro photography is photography that produces photographs of small items, larger than life size.  This means that in order to capture a close-up Macro image your magnification ratio must be at least 1:1.

What does 1:1 magnification mean?  Do I have to get close?

1:1 magnification means that you can capture a life sized image on your image sensor when focused as close as possible.
One of the greatest challenges in Macro Photography is magnification and one of the greatest technical issues is minimum focusing distance.  You might ask "why can't I just use my 50mm 1.8 and get really close"?  The answer is that your 50mm 1.8 (generally) has a minimum focusing distance of around 18 inches.  This means that you have to stand 18 inches away from your subject in order to focus your lens.
For Macro purposes, the lens does not allow you to get close enough to your subject.

You can however, stack Macro Extension tubes on your 50mm lens to change the minimum focusing distance and achieve 1:1 magnification.

Achieve 1:1 Magnification With A Macro Extension Tube!

A Macro Extension Tube lets you get close up photography called Macro. This is exactly what I need for under $50.00!
The reason your 50mm 1.8 will not focus to a 1:1 magnification is because the front element is too far back.  Through extension, you are able to move the front element forward and therefore move closer to your subject while retaining focus.  An extension tube fits between your lens and the camera mount, moving your lens away from the camera and allowing you to focus closer.  Closer = more magnification. Extension can be achieved with Macro Extension Tubes.  These are widely available at a relatively low cost.  Note that I have only provided links to Extension Tubes with electronic connections.  There are tubes out there for even less than the ones below but they do not electronically connect to your camera and therefore give you little control.  It is better to spend a couple of more dollars than to have less control.  Trust me.

Where Can I Find Macro Extension Tubes that will achieve 1:1 Magnification?
We have handpicked three options for you.

We hope this helps you get started!  Each week we will post some great Macro Tips for you.  Next week we will talk about Focus stacking in Adobe® Photoshop® in order to help bring your gorgeous Macro's into focus.  Note:  if you are buying Macro extension tubes the plane of focus and the depth of focus is going to be very shallow as is the case even with dedicated macro lenses.  Next Mondays tips will help with that.

How I Got The Shot:  The Dramatic Power Of Under Exposure

2/16/2015

About two years ago, I noticed my photography getting steadily darker and darker.  There was no problem with my camera, and no problem with the lights.  It was just me.  I think that as photographers our personal art flows with our personal life.  Two years ago our family made some major changes that affected me profoundly and as a result, my photography.
Let me just tell you a secret.
I was so upset that I didn't take my camera out for nearly 6 months.  Since I take at least 100 pictures a day, that is profound.
As I started going darker and darker with my exposure, it changed my photography and it changed how I saw and ultimately captured the light.  I made it a point to really see the light.  Where is it coming from?Where is it landing?  Where is it concentrated?

Here are some images I took around that time.
Scottish Terrier. Dramatic pet photography by Amy Stanley from Magic and Light Collection
Cocker Spaniel. Dramatic Pet Photography by Amy Stanley from Magic And Light Collection
Perfect Daddy Daughter picture. Find out how to achieve dramatic images like this. Magic and Light Collection.

What I learned through this process is that there is power in under exposure.

If you slightly under expose or even greatly underexpose your image, you will see where the ambient light is coming from and where it is landing.  There can be power in underexposure.  It can make the seer look closer, pay more attention, and it can draw the focus toward your subject.

The next picture was taken on a an overcast, freezing day, in Dachau, Germany.  I have been there twice, and twice it has been miserable.  I have been there once in summer and once in winter.  Recently, I was there in December.  It was so cold, and the skies were so gray.  There wasn't much ambient light to be had when I walked up to the Jewish Monument.  The light and the air was so gray.  The thing is, I remember it this way in the summer as well.  Haunting.
I usually snap away and then deal with exposure issues in post processing but I knew this time I really wanted to go dark and "find the light".  This is a dramatically haunting location.  I followed my husband and my daughter down the ramp and into the chamber.  They walked through and left.  I hung behind because I knew there was something poignant to capture.
Jewish monument at Dachau Concentration Camp Dachau, Germany Photographer: Amy Stanley
I'm happy to say that while things are not as difficult as they were a couple of years ago, I am still intentionally underexposing to find the light.  I love dramatic photography, which is something that has taken me years to figure out.
While in the past,  I have specialized in commercial photography, my photography has evolved into something that is not commercial.  I'm okay with that.

Are you wondering how to under expose your images to find the light?

Look through the viewfinder of your DSLR that is set on "evaluative metering".  Do you see this:

This is what an in camera light meter looks like. Read this article to see how you can use it to achieve dramatic images. Magic And Light Collection

This is your in camera light meter.  The center (in theory) should represent correct exposure.  The numbers to the right of the center represent a brighter exposure, and the numbers to the left of the center represent a darker exposure.  Depending on how your DSLR is set up, you will use a dial to move the exposure up and down.  Moving the exposure even slightly to the left will help you get a feel for how your camera responds to under exposure.  I recommend playing with it to see the results that you get.  I should note that I don't believe in this as rule but rather as a technique used to achieve a specific outcome.

Be Inspired This Winter By Macro Photography

2/12/2015

Let Macro Photography Inspire You To Get Outside This Winter.

Is anyone else feeling uninspired this winter?  I am.  Clients aren't requesting as many outdoor sessions, and personally, I am not a studio photographer.  I need to be:

Outside.
In the dirt.
Flailing in the sand.
To get a picture.

How is that for a little photography faux haiku.  That's me though.  Studio = nightmare to me.  Does anyone else reading this feel this way?  In December, I climbed straight up a mountain in Germany with two cameras around my neck, one being a Mark III with a wide angle lens.  It was heavy.  I was sweating on the edge of hypothermia by the time I got to the the top and I was loving every minute of it.
I haven't had much time in the last 2 months to work on my personal portfolio and I have been kind of down about it.  Winter has definitely had a hand in that.  It occurred to me this morning that I need to just get outside and take some pictures. Macro is the perfect excuse to get out there and start snapping away.

Why You Need To Switch To A Newer Version Of Photoshop Elements Now!

2/11/2015

If you are still working in Adobe Photoshop Elements 7-10, you need to read this right away.  It's time for you to make the switch to version 11 or higher!

Adobe Photoshop Elements 11
Adobe Photoshop Elements 12
Adobe Photoshop Elements 13

Here at MLC, this is how we feel about the jump from Photoshop Elements 10-11.
Jaw dropping-ly exciting.

Making the switch to Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 or higher is essential.
Recently, my Mom has become interested in photography and was talking to me about Photoshop stuff.  She mentioned that she has Elements 7 and could use it for working on pictures.  You should have seen the look on my face.

Nooooooooooooooo.

If you used to have versions 7-10 made the switch to Elements 11 in 2012, you know what I'm sayin'.

I would think that people have upgraded over the years, but my Moms' comments on Elements 7 have prompted me to think that maybe some of our customers here at MLC haven't made the switch.  If you haven't then now is the time.

I have to point out that the Elements software itself as far as what it offers hasn't changed that much.  However, there are two major changes.

Major noteworthy changes from a developers and ultimately a customers perspective:
1.  Layer-Masking Capability
2.  Improved Action Installation

Photoshop Elements 11-13 Layer Masking

Starting in 2012 with Adobe Photoshop Elements 11, Adobe added layer-masking capability.  In previous versions of Elements, it was a difficult process to add a layer mask while using some effects.  All of the normal adjustment layers such as Hue/Saturation, Levels, etc. came with a layer mask automatically.  But many of the other advanced techniques used had to rely on a clipping mask.  A clipping mask is a technique used to force a layer mask onto a layer using an adjustment layer and clipping it to the layer where the mask is needed.

Does that sound complicated?

Well, it is.

For a developer like me, this process has been plagued with problems.  Clipping masks don't always translate well between the full version of Photoshop and Elements and often (very often) over the years Actions have failed in testing because of this.

Beginning with Elements 11, Adobe gives full layer masking capability that matches up with the layer masking capability of the full version of Photoshop.

No more clipping masks!

For us here at MLC, this means many less failed Actions, and many more Actions that we are able to offer to Elements users.

Photoshop Elements 11-13 Improved Action Installation

Beginning with Adobe Photoshop Elements 11, we see a brand new way to install Actions.  Previously, it took a lot of work for Elements users to install Actions in the photo effects folder of their computer.  The process of installation was different for PC users, Mac users, Vista users, and XP users.  The process was fraught with problems from the beginning.

In other words, it was hard y'all.

There were media databases to rename...which always scared me for some reason.  There were twice as many files to install as each action had to have a corresponding thumbnail.  There were missing Actions, missing photo effects folders...it was just a lot.

Now it is simple, and translates well across all software versions and operating systems.  You simply install the Actions nearly exactly the same way as the full version of Photoshop.  See our video on how to install Actions in Elements 11-13.  In 2013, Adobe released Elements 12 and a year later version 13.  Photoshop Elements version 14 is in the works now and should be released in the next year.  I doubt it will be earth-shattering as the jump from Elements 10-11 was.

In short, for these reasons you should switch from versions prior to Elements 11 to one of the versions after 11.  Elements 13 is currently available for instant download for both PC and MAC on Amazon here.

Here at MLC, we have made the difficult decision to no longer support Photoshop Elements versions 7-10 as we have for the last 4 years.  We truly believe that our customers are better supported in Elements 11-13 and beyond.

We will start this transition with existing products on March 1, 2015.  We are confident that this will serve our customer base much better in the future.

Do you have questions?  Do you love the newer versions of Photoshop Elements like we do?  Let us know!  Leave a comment!

6 Last Minute Gift Ideas For The Photographer You Love.

2/10/2015

I may or may not be writing this post so that I can send my husband the link to it.
Hahahahaha.
That's the truth of this post.  I hearty heart love all of this stuff!  I want it, and so will the photographer that you love.  If you have been scratching your head for ideas this year, look no further.

6 ideas for the photographer you love. Cute mug, vintage camera, custom camera strap, cameral lens mug, jo totes camera bag.
Personally, I am not a jewelry girl.  I am a thing girl.  I like things that can be used for something.  Useful things.  Like a super cute camera strap.  Or a camera bag that looks like a nice purse.
As a photographer, those things are really exciting to me and ultimately inspire me to work harder.

This post is for two kinds of people.  Those who are looking for ideas for the photographer they love, and those who are in love with photography and need to drop some hints.

I'll be using this to drop some hints.

6 Last Minute Gift Ideas For The Photographer You Love.

1.

Cute mug for Photographers

This cute mug from Click & Blossom.  I love the colors, typography, &
obviously the camera graphic.
Acknowledging how busy and hardworking photographers are will go a long way!  I know many of us are balancing busy schedules with families and that means a lot of very busy days.

3.

Stainless Steel Camera Lens Coffee Mug

This camera lens stainless steel coffee mug from MobStub.   Right now, this mug is only $12.00.  At that price 4 of them would be a great gift idea for a studio waiting room!  How cute would THAT be!

5.

Teal Camera Pendant Necklace with rhinestone

If you feel like going the jewelry route, a camera necklace is a really cute and really personal idea.  There are a ton of design options on Etsy that can also be personalized.

2.

Vintage Kodak Flashfun camera

A vintage camera to display (or even use) has to be one of the cutest gifts.  They are readily available from many different sources online as well as thrift stores.  I recommend starting your search on Etsy.  Convo the seller and ask for speedy shipping, this is last minute!

4.

Jo Totes Camera Bag

This camera bag from Jo Totes.
The photographer you love needs a great smaller scale camera bag.  Here is why. Personally, I have a large Tamarac camera bag.  I keep everything in it.  Macro stuff, off camera flashes, all lenses, two camera bodies, etc.  If I want to go to a session, I don't need my macro equipment & a lot of other stuff, like two camera bodies.  A smaller bag, allows you to bring just what you need

and leave the rest.

6.
A cute custom camera strap is at the top of my list. I imagine just about every other photographer and mamarazzi out there wants one too.  If nothing else, a great colorful camera strap will remind you to have a great time.  That is what it is all about.  Having a matching camera strap and bag wouldn't hurt either...just sayin'.

Custom Camera Strap on Etsy

These options really run the gamut as far as price goes.  There is something for every budget.  Photographers live and breathe photography.  Get something to acknowledge how hard they work.  They will appreciate that.  I know I would.  Winkity-wink-wink.

Essential Food Photography, Photoshop Actions For Food Photographers and Food Bloggers.

Our brand new Essential Food Photography Action Set is designed for Food Photographers, Food Bloggers and all around Foodies!

Picture
Picture
Have you wondered how all of those great food images come together on your favorite blogs or sites like Foodgawker (my favorite)?  It takes some editing to get these truly scrumptious images.  We all know that RAW images need a little TLC in Adobe® Photoshop® or Adobe® Photoshop® Elements® and here at MLC, we have a brand new solution to help you work smarter.  Essential Food Photography© is our brand new set of Actions, available for Adobe® Photoshop® and Adobe® Photoshop® Elements®.
In total, there are 33 Actions and 3 storyboard templates available.
This set has the power to really shorten your workflow in a meaningful way. But even better, if you are a beginner at taking snapshots of food, there is no need to guess about what you need to do. We have created couple of videos that show how several of the Actions work.  In these videos I am working in Adobe® Photoshop® Creative Cloud® but the process is the same for previous versions of Photoshop®.
It is also the same for Elements® 11-13.

How To Achieve A Clean Edit
In this video, we show you how to use Image Cleaner.  This Action mimics the Camera RAW Filter.  Even if you have a version of Adobe® Photoshop® that predates Creative Cloud® or if you are using Elements® you can still pull this Action up at any time (with fully layer masking capability)
and achieve perfect Camera RAW results!

How To Achieve A Brighter & More Balanced Image
In this video, we show you how to brighten the shadows, pop the highlights, & boost the orange tones.

3 Storyboards Included:
These 3 storyboards make it easy to display your work on Facebook, your blog, or website.  They come to you in easy to use .psd files.  The options allow you to display four images, seven images, or one image with a headshot.  Two of the options have a customizable color bar that allows you to choose a complimentary color from your image.

This is truly a dynamic new set that we are ultra excited about.  As die hard foodies ourselves, we use this set every day, even on our iPhone pics!  It is available for Instant Download so you can get started right away!  For all of the details including a list of Actions, and a description of each one, head over to the Essential Food Photography page.

How To Install Actions In Adobe Photoshop Elements 13

How To Install Actions In Adobe® Photoshop® Elements® 13

Ready to learn how to install Actions in Adobe® Photoshop® Elements® 13?  If you are a pre Elements® 11 customer then you understand how revolutionary the switch has been from installing Actions in the effects palette to installing Actions in the Action Player.   If you are upgrading to Elements® 13 from a version prior to Elements® 11, the prepare to be shocked and awed.

There are no more thumbnails.

No more media database files to rename.

None of that nonsense.

Look at the image below.  Easy Peasy.
Picture
This new version actually mimics the way Actions are installed, stored, and loaded in the full version of Photoshop.

For a developer like me, this is amazing.  Compatibility and testing in Elements has always been pretty difficult, but now everything changes.

Can I get an Amen.

If you have a version of Elements®, that is prior to 11 and you are someone that works with Actions a lot, I recommend switching to Elements 13.  I was able to download it from Amazon for $69.99.  That is a GREAT price for any Adobe® Photoshop® product.  Amazon offers direct software downloads so there is no need to wait for boxed software to arrive or deal with CD's, etc.  It is quite a long download, at least on my iMAC so be sure to set aside some time to be sure that your internet has a continuous connection.  This process is the same as with Elements 11 and 12.  We are working to come up with a video to support those two versions specifically but this should work perfectly for you.

Let's take a look at how easy it is to install Actions in Adobe® Photoshop® Elements® 13.

If you are interested in the 5 Tones Of Winter Action Set for Adobe® Photoshop® Elements®, you can find it here.

Did You Sleep Through The New Facebook Changes For Business Pages?

Did You Sleep Through The New Facebook Changes For Business Pages?

I did.  January rolled in like any other month and WHAM, the number of people seeing our posts on the MLC Facebook page bottomed out.  I couldn't figure out what was going on.  Apparently I slept through this letter Facebook posted to owners of business pages.  This is what January looked like on the MLC Facebook page.
Low reach on Facebook
That was staggering...and overwhelming.

The letter starts by saying that the goal of Facebooks "News Feed" has been to show people what they want to see.  They surveyed users and asked how they feel about what they see in their News Feed, and those users overwhelmingly wanted to see less promotional content.  Promotional content = how we keep in touch with customers on Facebook.

They go on to say that they are applying more controls to promotional posts, so people see more of what they want from our Pages.  They outline three key traits that make posts feel too promotional.

  1. Posts that solely push people to buy a product or install an app
  2. Posts that push people to enter promotions and sweepstakes with no real context
  3. Posts that reuse the exact same content from ads

Facebook goes on to say that in January 2015, people will see less of the above mentioned type of content.  They acknowledge that this new approach might raise questions about pages and their role within Facebook and they reassure us that "pages still matter".  Which leaves them sounding slightly like they are breaking up with us.

They do offer us a little bit of advice in saying that businesses should think of their Facebook page as the cornerstone of their business rather than a publishing service.  The cornerstone of most businesses is advertising and what this letter doesn't come out and say is that we can still reach our customers by paying for them to see each post.

In short, I still believe in Facebook for business.  I have made connections and formed relationships with many of my customers this way.

If you are following MLC on Facebook, then you want to make sure you are getting the news about 5 For $5.00 Fridays, giveaways, promotional events, discounts, and more.

Like and Follow us.  By clicking the follow button at the top of our page you will be sure to continue to get our updates in your News Feed.

Like And Follow on Facebook
If you missed this letter like I did and have been overwhelmed by the lack of communication with your audience, you can still boost posts for as little as $1.00/day and advertise your page for as little as $1.00/day.  You can reach as many people who like your page as you want, you just have to understand that now you will have to pay for it.  Organic reach for Pages is over.

If you are still confused and think you should look into what you can do differently this year, you can review Facebook's Page publishing tips and best practices.

I came across a great blog post by Pam Dyer at Pamorama.  She gives us some insight into how we can raise our engagement rate.

Im pretty sure with the new strategy Facebook has rolled out, we can all use some great advice.
